Did you know that more than 35 million people in this country are missing all their upper and/or lower teeth? Tooth loss is common as we age, and the most common solution to date has been being fitted for dentures. But dentures come with a lot of drawbacks, including discomfort, forbidden foods, and cleaning hassles.
A still fairly new concept, All-on-4 is gaining in popularity, and for good reason. Our Jacksonville area patients who’ve opted for the procedure love it for a variety of reasons. Here are the top ones.
This isn’t to bash dentures. They’ve been an often life-changing dental solution for many people. They do, however, require sometimes drastic changes in lifestyle and can affect how you eat, speak, and care for your “teeth.” To many wearers, they never feel quite like natural teeth. One of the biggest problems? They’re retained in your mouth with adhesives, and you could spend a lot of time worrying about whether they’re properly in place.
The All-on-4 procedure is a more comfortable solution than dentures because the implants are more secure and thus feel more like natural teeth. It’s a simple concept: your previously made or new customized denture device is permanently mounted to your jaw via four dental implants placed in each arch. As the implants heal, they bond with your natural bone structure.
All-on-4 dentures remove the frustrations that patient’s express about loose dentures:
Maintenance of your All-on-4 implants is like taking care of your natural teeth. Avoid abrasive particles, especially those found in whitening toothpastes, though, because they can create a rough surface on the implants that promotes bacterial adherence and staining. A water pick can be used to flush under the bridge, but fluoride is not necessary because they are not natural teeth.
One of the greatest benefits to the All-on-4 concept is you’re no longer limited to what you’re able to chew (and your sense of taste is restored). Immediately following surgery it’s important to avoid hard and very hot or cold foods, with a couple of days of liquid or pureed foods recommended. After that, you can eat just about all your favorite foods again because your bite is increased up to 70% more than it was with dentures.
The All-on-4 concept helps prevent the bone deterioration that often accompanies denture use. The implants recreate stimulation to your jaw bone, restoring its lost height and width.
As long as the area around the implants are kept clean and free of disease and you avoid smoking, published studies show an up to 98% success rate.
